Despite the incredible penetration of digital technology, it turns out that some workflows still happen the old-fashioned way. In particular, CBS Austin reports that many testing labs in Texas fax their results to the public health agency, despite there being a mandate for digital reporting. This analog method adds extra time to the test-report cycle since results need to be entered by hand from the paper faxes. The Austin public health officials say there often is a 7-10 day lag between testing and contacting patients who test positive.
