If there is any company out there with mobility data, Google is the one. Given the ubiquity of Maps, Google likely has the highest percentage of individual location data out there. They have now come to the Covid-19 fight, publishing daily community mobility reports. Researchers have been clamoring for more location/mobility data so this should be a welcome huge (and growing) data set for researchers and media alike.
One question posed by all this data is the degree of anonymization. Using data from different sources, it often isn’t hard to take a piece of data and associate it with an actual person. While these reports are a couple of steps removed, discussions about how granular and personal you can go in the name of public health/safety will need to happen. Like now.
